New Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri took charge of his first competitive game on Sunday as they faced Premier League winners Manchester City in the Community Shield, and the signs weren’t promising for the former-Napoli man.
Chelsea deservedly lost the game 2-0, but more worrying was their complete lack of attacking threat. They managed just five shots on Manchester City’s goal, two of which were on target.

They looked tired and jaded at Wembley, and even with a fairly strong team out, they failed to make much of an impression on the match. Alvaro Morata was almost anonymous up front again, and it further emphasised just how much The Blues depend on Eden Hazard.
They are likely to be without Hazard again here, with him and Thibaut Courtois only just returning from their extended break after the World Cup. Both of them are the subject to growing transfer speculation though, and the thought of Chelsea starting the season without those two players will strike fear into the fans’ hearts.
Chelsea can’t even boast an impressive pre-season record. They have scored just three goals in their three matches against Perth Glory, Inter Milan, and Arsenal, playing out 1-1 draws in the latter of these two fixtures. They are also likely to heavily rotate the squad after being in competitive action on Sunday, so the goals are unlikely to flow freely from Chelsea.
Lyon is also expected to rotate some of their players, although many of their stars could start as they look for that final boost of fitness ahead of the start of the Ligue 1 campaign this weekend.
Nabil Fekir could potentially make an appearance after his extended World Cup break, but the air is rife with speculation surrounding his future too. Interest died down from his pursuers a couple of weeks ago, but reports suggest that Lyon has fuelled the fire by telling Liverpool they would let him leave for £60 million.
Lyon has looked promising going forward for much of this pre-season campaign, but they were pretty dour in their 1-0 loss to Inter Milan on Saturday and with their likely rotations we can see a low scoring match here.
Nine of Chelsea’s last ten matches have seen fewer than three goals, including all four of the ones managed by Sarri, so backing Under 2.5 Goals here along with 1-1 correct score predictions might be a good option. However, our main prediction is a home win or draw.
