Paris Saint-Germain – AS Monaco, France – Trophée des Champions, At Shenzhen City Stadium. Time: 13:00

Monaco and PSG will travel to Shenzhen in China for this Trophée des Champions match to make it the tenth consecutive French Super Cup game to be played outside of France. It will be a repeat of last year’s matchup when Paris came out victorious in a tight 2-1 affair.

Neither team have been in great form ahead of this game and PSG look to have brought last season’s poor closing performances with them into this pre-season. They have only played three friendlies so far but have already conceded 10 goals to Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Atlético Madrid. They did manage to eventually beat Madrid in their last game, but it has hardly been title winning quality from the champions.

To be fair though, many of their star players aren’t back from their summer break after the World Cup so they have been operating with many young players in the starting eleven and midfielder Lassana Diarra has even had to fill in at centre-back.

Presnel Kimpembe, Edinson Cavani, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe are all still unavailable and despite Marquinhos and Thiago Silva returning to training, they are still very early in their return to being match ready and will probably miss out.

Because of the massive transfer fee paid for Mbappe, PSG have only made one further signing in Gianluigi Buffon. The Italian is slowly but surely winding down his career so the move to Paris is ideal for him but a really negative move from the Parisians; it shows that they are still ultimately behind the quality of the powerhouses of Europe, accepting their released players without question.

When all of PSG’s superstars return from their breaks the team will be confidently looking for back to back league titles, but at the moment this very weak squad looks likely to perish in Shenzhen due to its lack of match ready experienced players and the better form of the opposition.

The Monégasques have only lost two of their last 10 matches and their players have been racking up healthy minutes ahead of the new season with six pre-season friendlies already played.

Two wins over Ruch Chorzow and Cercle Brugge have given opportunities to their attackers to get their first goals of the season with Stevan Jovetic, Rony Lopes and the hot prospect Willem Geubbels all happily obliging.

They have also suffered two disappointing losses to Hamburg and Paderborn, but neither was absolutely devastating and were more just aimed at building up fitness.

With their squad having less of an involvement in the World Cup this year, Monaco has looked lively at times with most of their star players fit and involved. Benaglio, Glik, Raggi, and Keita Baldé have all made appearances and will be raring to go ahead of the first competitive match of the season.

If Monaco wants to make a claim for the title this season, it wouldn’t hurt to beat PSG and send a message back to France of what they’re capable of.

Five of the last seven French Super Cup Finals have seen over 2.5 goals, as have six of Monaco’s last seven matches and seven of PSG’s last 11 so we’re backing another high scoring match. PSG are set to field an extremely weakened team due to the circumstances of their involvement in the World Cup.

Whereas Monaco have little to no issues regarding selection and are only waiting on the deadly striker Falcao and full-back Djibril Sidibe to make their first appearance back.

All of these stats and conditions point to a Monaco victory for us and that’s exactly what we’re backing. PSG have scored in all but two of their last 51 matches, so they should get a goal, especially with Christopher Nkunku looking lively, but ultimately we predict this game as Over 1.5 goals at fulltime.
