France vs Australia, 2018 FIFA World Cup Group C, At Kazan’ Arena. Time: 11:00

This French squad is dripping with talents from the defence to the attack, the abundance of talent is quite obvious. France will be hoping to get off to a great start on Saturday when they tackle Australia in the World Cup Group C opener at the Kazan Arena.

On paper, this match might look like a mismatch when you take into consideration the huge gulf in quality of personnel in both teams. The French team have the likes of Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, and Blaise Matuidi in midfield, all players who are in the prime years of their career.

At the back, they have exciting young players such as Samuel Umtiti, Raphael Varane, Presnel Kimpembe, and Benjamin Mendy. But it’s in the attack that they look most dangerous, possessing talents such as Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Nabil Fekir, and Olivier Giroud.

This set of talented players came very close to lifting the European Championship two years ago on home soil, only to be denied by an extra time goal against Portugal. They have had time to mature and grow since then though and will be hoping to go all the way in Russia.

France’s three warm-up friendlies didn’t go exactly the way they would have wanted. They were menacing and efficient in wins against Republic of Ireland and Italy, but against the United States, they couldn’t make their complete domination of the match count as it ended in a disappointing 1-1.

Dedier Deschamps men have been known to get complacent at times, such as when they failed to beat minnows Luxembourg at home last September, but when they turn up they can be unstoppable. France has won eight of their last 12 matches, scoring 25 goals in the process.

This will be a worry for Australia, especially when their defence contains no players who ply their trade in one of the top five European leagues. This lack of top-level experience shows as well, such as in the 4-1 thrashing against Norway back in March.

Fortunately for the men down under, their warm-up friendlies have gone much better. They beat Hungary on Saturday and preceded that with a 4-0 thrashing of Czech Republic, but stopping France is an altogether different challenge.

To be honest, we can’t see it happening, and we’re expecting goals galore. Nine of France’s last 14 games have seen at least three goals scored, as have five of Australia’s last seven. France has conceded in seven of their last nine matches.

France’s attack is undoubtedly a goldmine of talent, but there’s one gem that has stood out for years. Antoine Griezmann has had another excellent season at Atletico Madrid and finished Euro 2016 as the Golden Boot winner, so he might well be the man to deliver goals for France. Our prediction is a win for France and Over 1.5 goals at fulltime.

Peru vs Denmark, 2018 FIFA World Cup Group C, At Mordovia Arena. Time: 17:00

It’s fair to say that it’s been a rollercoaster of a year for Peru fans. First, they managed to qualify for their first World Cup since 1982, but then captain and talisman Paolo Guerrero had his already controversial doping ban extended in a move that ruled him out of fulfilling a lifelong dream of leading Peru in the World Cup.

After appeals from players themselves, this ban was stunningly overturned, allowing the captain and leading goalscorer to join up with his teammates.

He marked his return with a brace against Saudi Arabia at the start of June as Peru won 3-0, following that with a draw against Sweden and leaving them with an impressive 15 match unbeaten streak coming into the biggest few weeks of the players’ lives.

This is a huge match for both sides as well, and could ultimately decide which one of these, if any, makes it through to the knockout stages. France is the overwhelming favourites for the top spot, but Peru and Denmark are both in with a shot at the 2nd place along with underdogs Australia.

Denmark isn’t an easy side to beat either. They won 2-0 against Mexico on Saturday to make it seven wins, seven draws, and two defeats in their last 16 matches. It was this sort of form that saw them take 2nd place in their qualifying group and then beat the Republic of Ireland in the playoff, and with the likes of Kasper Schmeichel, Andreas Christensen, Christian Eriksen, and Nicolai Jorgensen in their ranks they certainly have a chance.

Both of these teams look defensively sound when you look at their recent friendly results, but their form in qualifying tells a different story. Peru scored in all but two of their last 11 qualifying games, but they only managed to keep a single clean sheet as well. Meanwhile, Denmark scored in all but two of their ten World Cup qualifiers but conceded in six of them in a comparatively easy group.

This discrepancy between their friendly form and their competitive record gives us an opportunity to believe that goals will be scored in this encounter. In the end, we’re expecting a draw game though, and four of both Peru’s and Denmark’s last nine games have ended all square.

Christian Eriksen is obviously the standout man for Denmark. The Spurs playmaker led them to this World Cup, scoring eight goals in qualifying and then bagging a hat-trick in the playoff against the Republic of Ireland. Eriksen is Denmark’s main threat for goals and it will not be a surprise if he scores today. Our prediction is Under 3.5 goals at fulltime.
