Egypt vs Uruguay, 2018 FIFA World Cup Group A, At Saint-Petersburg Stadium. Time: 13:00

The big question begging for an answer on everyone lips is will Mohamed Salah play? The Egyptian talisman has had an incredible season for Liverpool, and not just that he was instrumental in helping Egypt qualify for the World Cup for the first time in almost 30 years, scoring five goals in six World Cup qualifying matches.

The Liverpool forward injured his shoulder in the Champions League Final last month in Kiev, and although he has declared himself fit to play and some credible sources in the Egyptian team say he is fit and ready to start the match against Uruguay but he might not play the entire 90 minutes.

There are still doubts surrounding him. Whether the manager will risk him for their opener remains to be seen, but without him, the Pharaohs have struggled greatly upfront and that trend will likely continue against Uruguay if SAlah doesn’t play.

Egypt was not fantastic in the friendly matches, they lost 3-0 to Belgium last week, then drew goalless with Colombia. They are now winless in six games and have lost three of them, so confidence may be a bit low as they head into their match with Uruguay.

Uruguay on their part decided to play just one warm-up match ahead of the tournament. They played Uzbekistan in Montevideo and won 3-0 against the Asians.

Uruguay is a very solid team defensively. Their first choice centre-backs consist of the Atletico Madrid duo of Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez, both players are excellent defenders whose abilities cannot be questioned.

In attack, Uruguay has the world-class talents of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani as point men. Luis Suarez might get most of the accolades at club level, but Cavani has been the man running the show for Uruguay recently.

He was top of the goal charts of the South American World Cup qualifying stage, the PSG forward scored ten goals in their 18 games and he has continued in that trend scoring in three of Uruguay’s last four matches, so Cavani will be a big threat to the Egyptian defence in Today’s match.

It is extremely difficult to look beyond a win for Uruguay in this match. Also coupled with the uncertainty of Salah’s involvement in the match, Uruguay is firm favourite to win this match. Our prediction is a win for Uruguay.

Morocco vs Iran, 2018 FIFA World Cup Group B, At Saint-Petersburg Stadium. Time: 16:00

The long wait for Moroccan football to grace the world stage is over, it’s been 20 years since Morocco last played at the Mundial and that was at the 1998 World Cup in France. Now the Atlas Lions of Morocco is back with the big boys.

Morocco will be competing in a very strong group that comprises of Spain and Portugal. The difficulty of those two matches makes this game against Iran a must-win fixture for both Morocco and Iran if they want to give themselves any decent chance or hope of progressing to the knockout stages.

Morocco will be the favourites to claim a victory here. This Moroccan team is quite talented, it is a squad which contains an array of gifted midfielders, a Juventus centre back, and a young forward in exceptional form.

Medhi Benatia captains the side from the centre of defence, whilst Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech is a key figure in midfield. Up front is RS Berkane’s 24-year-old striker Ayoub El Kaabi, who has netted an impressive 11 goals in just ten international caps.

It’s El Kaabi who we expect to be the difference here. He’s scored in five of his last six appearances for Morocco and is enjoying his new role as the national team’s Arrowhead in the attack, so he might as well be the man to deliver all 3 points to Morocco in this match.

Overall, Morocco is in excellent form. They haven’t lost a match in over a year, and have won 14 of their 18 games since then. Obviously, many of these have been against vastly inferior sides, but they do include the likes of South Korea, Egypt, Nigeria B team, Serbia, Ukraine, and Slovakia.

Iran, on the other hand, lost 2-1 to Turkey towards the end of May and followed that up last week with a rather disappointing 1-0 win against Lithuania. The truth is that Iran neither have the talent or the form to trouble Morocco in this match and that makes the Iranians big underdogs.

Iran’s recent defeats to Turkey and Tunisia is a big setback for the team, and we think the odds for a Morocco Win here are excellent value, so our prediction is a win for Morocco.

Portugal vs Spain, 2018 FIFA World Cup Group B, At Olimpiyskiy Stadion Fisht. Time: 19:00

Current European Champions Portugal against former World Champions Spain is a huge game any time or anywhere, but this game is taking place at the World Cup and that makes the first heavyweight clash of the tournament.

These two teams are heavy favourites to progress from Group B, and with matches against Morocco and Iran seen as comfortable wins for both sides, this could actually be the most important game in the group. Whichever team wins this is likely to be at the summit of the group after three matches, so this could be an intense battle for the number one spot in the group.

Portugal claimed the European crown in 2016 on the back of a strong defensive setup, but two years on and they’re yet to improve on that defence. Their centre back partnership remains dependent on the 35-year-old Pepe, and he will be partnered by either 36-year-old Bruno Alves or 34-year-old Jose Fonte. This could prove to be counter-productive when faced with teams that possess attackers with great pace.

Last time out Portugal comfortably beat Algeria 3-0, following on from a goalless draw against Belgium at the start of June. They dominated World Cup qualifying, but they have only won three of their seven friendlies since, failing to beat United States, Netherlands, Tunisia, and Belgium.

Spain also dominated qualifying, dropping just two points in ten games and ending up five points ahead of fellow heavyweights Italy. They scored 36 goals in these ten games and conceded just three goals at the other end. Since then they have won three and drawn three, leaving them unbeaten since their Euro 2016 exit almost two years ago.

However, turmoil has embroiled the team in the last few days. Julen Lopetegui has been sacked, with the Spanish FA taking the unexpected news badly that he would be the new Real Madrid manager and instantly ended his tenure at the helm of Spain. Spain’s Sporting Director Fernando Hierro will take the helm for the tournament, so at least the players should have some former experience of the man in charge.

Spain was impressive at the back during qualifying, but they have only kept one clean sheet in their last five matches and shipped three against Russia back in November. However, they have scored at least two goals in 15 of their 20 games since Euro 2016 ended, so we can expect to see them pushing the Portugal defence hard on Friday.

To make matters worse, Portugal conceded three against Netherlands and two against Tunisia in their recent games. For this reason, we like the look at this match as a banker for Over 1.5 Goals at full time.
