Chelsea FC vs Real Madrid, Champions League – Matches, At Stamford Bridge, Time: 20:00

Chelsea’s 4-1 defeat to Brentford at the weekend must have shaken Thomas Tuchel and his team, but it brought to mind a crushing result from last season. Just as they did this term, the Blues returned from the March international break with a shock loss the last term, going down 5-2 to Brentford.

It was an almost unexplainable result, while it wasn’t reflective of the work Tuchel and his men would go on to do. Days later the Blues went and won at Porto in the Champions League, a major step on their road to European glory. Having seen them go all the way last season, don’t let the Brentford result factor too much when picking your winner in this tie.

It’s time to bash the bookies and gradually recover all that you’ve lost to the bookies in the past. This may not be a frequent rivalry, but that’s probably a good thing for the visitors if recent history is anything to go by. Real Madrid has faced Chelsea more times without ever winning than they have against any other side in European competition (5), drawing twice and losing three times against the Blues.

The European champions also have a fantastic record against Spanish sides in general. Chelsea are unbeaten in their last eight games against Spanish opposition in Europe (W4 D4), including in all five that have taken place during Tuchel’s reign (W3 D2).

It’s hard to see Real being happy with a clash against any of the remaining Premier League sides, despite them leading the way domestically. They were almost seen as shock semi-finalists a year ago, while the manner in which they were outplayed by PSG in the last round points to problems in this clash.

Real went to PSG looking like a side who were fully aware the away goals rule had been scrapped. They showed no ambition in their visit to Paris, eventually conceding a late winner. The most surprising thing was that it took them another hour in the home tie to get going. PSG led 1-0 in Madrid and 2-0 overall before they produced a trademark Champions League bottle job.

That wasn’t an isolated incident, as this Real side were recently blown apart by Xavi’s Barcelona. The Spanish leaders were comprehensively beaten 4-0 at home in the Clasico, so if Chelsea restores their pre-international break form they are worthy favourites.

Chelsea’s loss to Brentford is their only defeat across their last 15 matches, while they went into the game on the back of a six-match winning run. The internal issues at the club haven’t derailed things so far and they shouldn’t register in the minds of the players ahead of a game of this size.

The Blues have been improving throughout 2022 and the fact that Tuchel gave his players Monday off ahead of this game suggests he has a lot of faith in them to respond. They’ve been generally excellent in this competition under the German, winning four of their last five and 11 of 15 since he took charge. They’ve also kept 10 clean sheets in that run, while Real are likely to show little ambition just as they did in Paris.

That has me siding with the hosts in this one, while I see Chelsea scoring a couple in this clash. Not only has Mason Mount been in brilliant creative form, but the Blues had real joy through Christian Pulisic in both meetings with Real last term.

However, the man to watch is Kai Havertz, who scored for Germany during the break after a run of five goals and an assist in six matches for the Blues. Our prediction is a home win or a draw for Chelsea.
