Lobi Stars And Rangers To Know CAF Club Competition Opponents On Friday

Nigerian club representatives in this season’s CAF competition, Lobi Stars and Rangers international will know their opponents in the next round of both the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup when the draw is conducted in Cairo on Friday.

Lobi Stars booked a spot in the group stage of the CAF Champions League following a 2-0 win against Kenyan champions, Gor Mahia at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu on Saturday.

The Makurdi based club lost the first leg 3-1 in Nairobi a forth night ago but stormed back to win the reverse fixture 2-0 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu to seal their passage into the next round of the CAF Champions League on away goals rule.

Lobi Stars dominated the contest against the Kenyan Champions from the start but had to wait until the 70th minute to score the game’s opening goal through Sikiru Alimi.

Alimi grabbed his second goal of the game three minutes before regulation time to send his team Lobi Stars into the next round of the competition.

It is the second time Solomon Ogbeide’s led Lobi Stars will be playing in the group phase following their debut appearance in the competition in 2000.

They will be hoping to become the second Nigerian club to win the Champions League title after Enyimba won it back-to-back in 2003 and 2004.

Rangers made it to the play-off round of the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday following a 2-0 aggregate win against Union Sportive Madinet Bel Abbes in a match also played in Enugu on Sunday.

The Flying Antelopes held the Algerians to a goalless draw in the first leg in Algiers a forth night ago before confirming their passage into the next round with a comfortable 2-0 win in the return leg. No Nigerian club has won the Confederation Cup in the past.
