Huddersfield Set To Sign Super Eagles Defender Leon Balogun From Mainz 05

Huddersfield are on the verge of signing Super Eagles and Mainz 05 defender Leon Balogun on a free transfer, Balogun’s current Mainz contract expires at the end of this season and the 29-year-old will likely not renew his contract with the Bundesliga side.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria international has only made a disappointing 14 Bundesliga appearances in the colours of Mainz this season and Huddersfield are close to securing his services on a free transfer next season.

David Wagner’s side is still battling to secure their top-flight status for next season and it remains to be seen whether Balogun would still join Huddersfield if they are relegated.

Balogun’s current club Mainz is also involved in a relegation battle of their own, with Mainz only three points above the final relegation play-off spot.

Mainz was able to boost their survival push with a 3-0 whitewash of RB Leipzig on Sunday, the victory was a massive boost to their chances of beating the drop at the end of the season, although Balogun did not make the matchday squad due to injury.

Leon Balogun boosts of a fairly good Bundesliga statistic, among all players that have made at least 10 Bundesliga starts this season, only Ignacio Camacho (6.5), Douglas Santos (6.1), Benjamin Stambouli (6.1) and William (5.7) average more tackles and interceptions combined per game than Balogun (5.6).
