Can Arsenal Finally Secure The Premier League This Season?
We must go back to the 2003/04 season to find the last time Arsenal won the Premier League, meaning it has been over 20 years since The Gunners lifted the trophy.
Mikel Arteta has been doing an excellent job at the club and has Arsenal competing again at the top end of the table. However, pressure will begin to mount on the Spaniard if he fails to win the Premier League title this season.
Foundation Built
If we look back at the previous three Premier League seasons, Arsenal have finished in second place. In the 2023/24 campaign, they finished on 89 points, which is their highest total since they last won the title in 2004.
It was not good enough as Manchester City finished on 91 points to secure the title. In comparison, Arsenal finished with only 74 points last season, mainly thanks to the fact that they were held to a draw in 14 matches.
Arteta knows they must improve on that total and get back to 85 points plus if they want to win the title this season. However, three successive second-place finishes show a solid foundation is in place, and plenty of soccer wagers will be placed on Arsenal winning the Premier League title based on their recent progress.
Can A New Striker Make The Difference?
Arsenal fans and pundits have been calling for a big-name striker for many years, and they have their wish this season. Viktor Gyökeres has joined Arsenal from Sporting Lisbon, and the Swedish international striker is tasked with making a difference for Arsenal this season.
Gyökeres had a phenomenal strike rate in the Portuguese top flight, and Arteta will be hoping he can take that into the Premier League and score 20-plus goals this season.
We must go back to the 2019/20 season to find the last time an Arsenal player scored 20 goals or more in a single campaign. Kai Havertz was Arsenal’s top Premier League scorer last season with only 9 goals to his name.
If Arsenal are going to secure the Premier League title this season, they need Gyökeres to score a least double that number of goals.
Pressure
As highlighted at the top of the page, questions are going to be asked about Arteta if he cannot deliver the Premier League title this season. If Arsenal go close and narrowly miss out, it will be acceptable, but if they fall short and do not compete at the top, questions will be asked.
Arsenal are a team with enough about them to compete and win the biggest trophies this season, but how will the manager and players respond if they are in a title race and the pressure begins to mount in the final third of the season?
If Manchester City are back to their best and Liverpool continue where they left off last season, Arsenal knows they cannot afford to have a dip in form at any point during the season.
The Gunners certainly have the talent to compete for the title, but much will depend on the form of Liverpool and Manchester City, who could prove to be just too good for Arsenal.
