England vs Costa Rica International Friendly At Elland Road, Leeds. Time: 20:00 GMT

We all got an idea of the kind of lineup and formation Gareth Southgate could likely use in England’s first match at the World Cup on Saturday, as The Three Lions faced off against Nigeria at Wembley in the first of their two warm-up friendlies ahead of their trip to the Mundial in Russia.

England came out victors against the Nigerian side by 2-1 thanks to an early goal from Gary Cahill and one from Harry Kane later in the first half. Alex Iwobi scored for the visitors early in the second half as they threatened to get an equaliser, but ultimately it was England who walked away with a morale-boosting win and a decent performance to go with it.

On Thursday against Costa Rica, we’re expected to see the Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson back in the starting lineup after he was rested against Nigeria due to his involvement in the Champions League final, whilst fellow Champions League finalist Trent Alexander-Arnold is likely to get some game time too.

Apart from that, England coach Gareth Southgate could give some of the other potential starters a chance to show what they can offer to the team, with the likes of Harry Maguire, Danny Rose, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Marcus Rashford all being resigned to the bench last time out but may likely start against Costa Rica.

Costa Rica harbour some bad memories for a select few of this England squad. Four years ago they were held to a disappointing goalless draw in Brazil against Costa Rica, a game that aided the North American side in qualifying for the knockout stages. They surprisingly topped the group ahead of Uruguay, Italy, and England, with The Three Lions finishing bottom of the group with just a single point and crashing out at the group stages for the first time since 1958.

Costa Rica thrashed Northern Ireland 3-0 at the weekend thanks to goals from Venegas, Campbell, and Calvo. However, their overall form might be a bit of concern as they head to Russia. They have won just two of their last eight matches and have lost four of their last six.

In three of these four defeats, Costa Rica has failed to find the net, and away from home, they have lost four of their last five matches. England, meanwhile, is unbeaten in almost a year, winning six and drawing three of their nine matches since that friendly loss to France last summer.

The Three Lions have kept a clean sheet in six of these nine games too and considering Costa Rica’s struggles in front of goal, England may as well win this with another clean sheet. Harry Kane is, once again, the man to look out for in terms of delivering the goals for the Three Lions.

He has another wonderful season under his belt for Spurs, and his goal against Nigeria made it eight goals in his last seven appearances. We think England will win fairly comfortably and our prediction is 2-0.

Real Valladolid vs Sporting Gijon, Spanish Segunda Division Playoff At Estadio José Zorrilla. Time: 19:30 GMT

It was only up until the last three or four weeks of the Segunda campaign that Gijon dropped out of the automatic promotion race, though they come into this fixture in decidedly poor form. Rubén Baraja’s men have lost four of their last five.

Such form is not exactly what is required ahead of a high-pressure two-legged tie, although it is fair to say that Gijon wasn’t always at full strength during the f inal weeks, while their place in the playoffs was guaranteed for some time.

On the other hand, Valladolid required a final fixture win over Osasuna to grace the playoffs with their presence. In terms of form, Pucela comes into this first leg in better shape than their visitors. The hosts won last time out, beating a more than useful side by two goals to nil, while they’ve now won four of their last five.

In all honesty, as is often the case with play-off fixtures, this is anything but easy to call. From a defensive point of view, Gijon has been the better team this season, though it is Valladolid who’ve shown that bit more offensively, especially on their own patch. At the prices, neither team makes too much appeal, but ‘Both Teams to Score’ certainly does.

In terms of scoring goals, Valladolid has been very hard to knock this season, especially when plying their trade in front of their own fans. With 43 goals to their name at Estadio José Zorrilla, Thursday’s hosts finished the regular season as the top-scorers in the home league table.

In addition, not only did the hosts score goals overall, but they also made light work of notching against the better teams. Sergio González’s men scored in four of their five home matches against the other five teams who finished in the top six, while they scored an impressive total of nine goals in such matches.

However, for all they are an offensively astute unit, even against the best teams at this level, Valladolid are no strangers to conceding goals. Thursday’s hosts conceded more goals at home than any other team in the top six during the regular season, while they kept zero clean sheets against top-six teams at Estadio José Zorrilla. They’ll show no fear on Thursday and will indeed cause Gijon problems, though it would be no surprise if their open style once again saw them concede.

Given the defensive record of the hosts, especially in matches of this nature, Gijon should travel west feeling upbeat about their attacking chances. As the leagues’ fourth-highest scorers prior to the playoffs, the visitors are no slouches going forward, while they failed to score in just one of their away matches against top-six teams during the regular campaign.

Keeping out a hard-pressing Valladolid side may be difficult but profiting on the break probably won’t be. At the very least, as was the case when the teams last met, Rubén Baraja’s men won’t be without chances in this match.

At the end of the day, with Valladolid’s attacking approach in mind, an open encounter is likely to unfold. Consider this in conjunction with the fact that both teams have scored in eight of their ten combined respective home and away matches against top-six teams and it’s easy to arrive at ‘Both Teams to Score’ as a bet. However, our prediction is a home win for Real Valladolid
