Russia vs Saudi Arabia, 2018 FIFA World Cup Group A, At Luzhniki Stadium. Time: 16:00

The World Cup is upon us, the four-year wait is finally over, and on Thursday afternoon we can look forward to the 2018 World Cup kicking off at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. The opening match between host Russia and Saudi Arabia may not be the most glamorous fixture of this World Cup, but it is a match eagerly awaited by Billions of football audience across the globe.

Sbornaya of Russia come into the World Cup as the lowest ranked side in the FIFA World Rankings, the Russians are ranked 70th in the World and three places lower than the next lowest ranked side at the World Cup, which coincidentally happens to be the Green Falcons of Saudi Arabia.

Russia’s preparations for the World Cup haven’t gone according to plan. They lost 1-0 to Austria at the end of May and their draw with Turkey last week capped what had been a dismal run of form and result. They come into the opening match without a win since October, losing four and drawing three of their seven games.

The fact is that Russia has won just six of their matches since June 2016, and they have only beaten one team who are present in this World Cup since November 2015. They have lost eight of their last 14 matches against teams who have qualified for the 2018 World Cup, winning once against the Asian Tigers of South Korea.

Saudi Arabia may be officially the second worst nation at the tournament going by the latest FIFA rankings, but they actually performed quite well in their most recent warm-up friendlies, the Green Falcons of Saudi Arabia were able to lose by just 2-1 to a full strength German team. This was a much better showing than their 3-0 hammering against Peru at the start of June, and before that, they only lost 2-1 to Italy as well.

Russia may have the majority of the fans on their side, but it seems the bookies are overrating their abilities for this fixture against Saudi Arabia. Russia has won just two of their last 11 games, failing to beat the likes of Iran, Austria, and Turkey in the process.

Saudi Arabia has another advantage as well. Ten of their 23 man squad play for the same club, Al-Hilal. Many of these players have been teammates for most of their domestic career, and it’s that sort of team cohesion that can make the difference in such a high-pressure situation.

Head To Head

The only previous meeting between these two nations ended 4-2 to Russia back in a 1993 friendly clash.

Russia vs Saudi Arabia Stat
  • Russia hasn’t won a match since October 2017, losing four and drawing three since then.
  • The host nation has won just one of their last 14 matches against teams who have qualified for the 2018 World Cup.
  • Saudi Arabia has avoided defeat in six of their last 12 matches.
  • Russia is the lowest ranked nation at the 2018 World Cup, ranked three places below 67th placed Saudi Arabia.
Russia Team News
Veteran goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev will captain the host nation, with Krasnodar forward Fyodor Smolov expected to be leading the line at the other end of the pitch. The likes of Aleksandr Golovin and Alan Dzagoev will provide the main support for the lone striker.
Saudi Arabia Team News
Top scorer Mohammad Al-Sahlawi is likely to start up front for Saudi Arabia as he looks to add to his 28 goals in 40 appearances. 34-year-old Al-Hilal centre back Osama Hawsawi holds the most amount of international caps, with midfielder Taisir Al-Jassim, also of Al-Hilal, a close second with 132.

Russia Possible Lineup: Akinfeev, Fernandes, Ignashevich, Granat, Kudryashov, Zobnin, Samedov, Dzagoev, Golovin, Zhirkov, Smolov

Saudi Arabia Possible Lineup: Al Maiouf, Al-Breik, Hawsawi, Hawsawi, Al-Harbi, Otayf, Al-Shehri, Al-Jasssim, AL-Faraj, Al-Dawsari, Al-Sahlawi

Prediction

We think the host nation lack the capability to blow away this Saudi side, we expect a very tight and tense contest at the Luzhniki Stadium, so we will give Saudi Arabia a + 2 goals handicap as our prediction.
