That won’t trouble Leo Messi and co too much though and they will firmly expect to win the game. They made a solid start last weekend with a 3-0 home win against Alaves, with all the goals coming in the final half hour. Ernesto Valverde would have been happy with the level of performance, particularly coming on the back of a World Cup which saw most of his preferred eleven feature in the knockout phase.
Real Valladolid coach Sergio González would have been very happy with his team’s start too. They were on the back foot for most of the game against Girona but held on for a 0-0 draw in their first game back in the top flight following promotion from the Segunda Division playoffs. Even though they are at home here, an equally defensive approach is likely and they will put men behind the ball and try to frustrate Barcelona.
That game-plan could work for a while. Barca did take 64 minutes to break Alaves down last weekend and they struggled for goals on the road in the 1st Half last season. A huge 74% of their away goals came in the second period, while in the 1st Half they netted 12 and conceded 9, not really the figures you’d expect of a team that ran away with the title.
They do wear teams down though and still ended up winning 63% of their away league matches last term. Those kinds of figures suggest backing Draw-Barcelona (HT-FT) is worth a punt here.
Going for Barcelona & Under 3.5 Goals also appeals. Clearly, they are vastly the superior team and should win the game but Real Valladolid will be very motivated opponents in their first top-flight home game in over four years. They showed enough organisation and defensive quality last week to suggest they can at least keep the score down here.
However scoring goals will be a big problem for them this season. Jaime Mata netted 33 times in the Segunda Division last term, 48% of Valladolid’s total but he will be at Getafe this term and they don’t look to have signed a suitable replacement. It’s hard to see them scoring here. However, our main prediction is an away for Barcelona.
