2nd placed Ajax take on 18th placed Groningen at the Amsterdam Arena this Saturday night, and the hosts will be expected to bag a cosy victory to keep tabs on leaders and main title rivals PSV.
An opening night 1-1 draw with Heracles is the only blot on Ajax’s copybook so far this term, but with PSV boasting a 100% record, it means Erik ten Hag’s side trail their fellow Dutch giants by two points in the early stages of the campaign.

Ajax really got going before the international break, however, notching an emphatic 5-0 success against newly promoted Emmen here on match day three before blowing Vitesse Arnhem away 0-4 last time out as veteran striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar racked up his third and fourth goals of the season.
With PSV facing a difficult trip to ADO Den Haag this weekend, a venue at which they’ve drawn on their last three visits, Saturday’s clash with struggling Groningen presents Ajax with a golden opportunity to potentially make up ground at the top of the table.
And their skinny odds to do just that seem completely justified. Ajax has won their last 10 home Eredivisie fixtures against Groningen, and haven’t lost in Amsterdam to The Green-White Army in their last 24 encounters.
On top of that, Ajax has won 15 of their last 19 Eredivisie outings at the Amsterdam Arena dating back to the start of the last term whilst Groningen have won just two of their previous 19 away games over the same period.
So what hope do Groningen really have of getting a positive result this weekend? Well, they don’t have much in truth as their lengthy odds suggest.
Aside from those damning stats above, Danny Buijs’ charges have been extremely poor in their first four fixtures of the campaign and deservedly sit third bottom heading into Saturday’s daunting clash.
Groningen did pinch a 0-1 success away at De Graafschap on matchday three, but apart from that result, it’s been mostly doom and gloom.
They’ve failed to score in both home games so far, going down 0-1 to both PEC Zwolle and Willem II, and they were hammered 5-1 on the opening night by Vitesse – who as mentioned were on the end of a 0-4 hiding to Ajax a fortnight ago.
Groningen will have to get their act together in the coming weeks to steer themselves clear of the relegation places, but that is likely to be achieved by scrapping for results against teams in and around the bottom half.
We certainly can’t envisage them making any headway this weekend, where avoiding a heavy defeat is likely to be the priority for Buijs’ team. Our prediction for this match is a comfortable home win for Ajax.
