Dundalk vs Sligo Rovers

Dundalk narrowly lost 2-1 away to Waterford in the league last week Friday, Dundalk is now three points behind the reigning League Champions Cork City in the league standings. Dundalk will play Sligo Rovers at the Oriel Park Stadium on Friday, this Sligo Rovers team is a shadow of their glorious past, they have been so poor and very inconsistent this season.

The Lilywhites will have an excellent opportunity to bounce back from last week defeat to Waterford by defeating  Sligo Rovers and move level on points with Cock City who play away to Derry City in a tough fixture. Dundalk played on Tuesday against Bohemians in a League Cup game and won 3-0 with midfielder Dylan Connolly as the star performer on the night after he bagged a brace to seal a comfortable victory for the Lilywhites.

Stephen Kenny’s men have been very impressive at home where they have won seven games and drew one of their last eight matches across all competitions. The combination of Pat Hoban and Michael Duffy has proven to be highly effective and deadly in front of goal and they’ve already combined to score 16 goals so far this season.

Dundalk only lead the head to head tie by two wins ahead of the 66th encounter with Sligo Rovers on Friday. Nevertheless, the Lilywhites have been in complete control when it comes to recent head to head encounters with Sligo Rovers. Dundalk has won three and drew just one of their last four meetings with The Bit o’ Red.

Sligo Rovers were lucky to avoid relegation last season and sadly they have started off the new season very poorly. However, Sligo Rovers has managed two wins in their last three games in all competitions and Coach Gerard Lyttle’s side will be high in confident after recording a surprise win against Waterford in a League Cup match last Monday.

Sligo Rovers has been quite frugal at the back despite their poor form and has not conceded more than one goal in any of their last five games on the road in all competitions, a streak which includes the trip to Turner’s Cross and the clash with the likes of Cork City (a narrow 1-0 loss). Dundalk may thus struggle to break the deadlock which is why our prediction will be a narrow win for Dundalk.
