Borussia Dortmund vs Eintracht Frankfurt, Germany – Bundesliga, At Signal Iduna Park. Time: 19:30
Borussia Dortmund’s landscape has changed since the glory days of the early 2010’s and last season’s topsy-turvy performances, although enough to salvage a fourth-place finish, have prompted a due change. Former-Nice boss Lucien Favre is the man Der BVB have assigned to mould them into title contenders once again, and with four points from their opening two matches (W1 D1) since coming in, he’s on the right track.
Dortmund will be looking to up the ante following a 0-0 draw away to Hannover before the international break through, and Favre will no doubt be hoping that Spanish forward Paco Alcacer, on loan from Barcelona, can help them do just that.
He’s expected to spearhead Dortmund’s attack on his Bundesliga debut against Frankfurt on Friday, with captain Marco Reus and USMNT star Christian Pulisic providing support from the wings.

Eintracht Frankfurt is another club that had a change of management over the summer, and new coach Adi Hutter already has something of a crisis on his hands. He heads to Dortmund with some big decisions to make in terms of his defence, travelling there without injured centre backs Timothy Chandler and Carlos Salcedo, while left-back Jetro Willems misses this to suspension following his straight red card in their 2-1 defeat at home to Werder Bremen last time out.
Frankfurt’s saving grace is that Croatian World Cup star Ante Rebic may return here. Frankfurt has proven one of the least dangerous offences in the Bundesliga so far this season, registering a joint-lowest three shots on target over their opening two matches, so he may be used as an impact sub should they continue to prove largely ineffective going forward.
So what should we look for betting-wise in this match? Well, though the scoreline doesn’t show it, Lucien Favre’s Dortmund were once again very dangerous and created plenty of chances in their last Bundesliga outing against Hannover – in fact, Dortmund’s Marco Reus and Max Philipp were only denied from getting on the scoresheet by the frame of the goal – and when you look at their attacking talent you shouldn’t expect anything less.
Forwards Marco Reus, Maximillian Philipp, Christian Pulisic, and Jordan Sancho (to name just a few) were all on fire as the 2017/18 season came to its conclusion, and now Dortmund has added to that with Barcelona’s Alcacar. After knocking four past RB Leipzig at Signal Iduna Park in their last home outing, a 4-1 win, Der BVB is looking at 16 goals scored over their last six home outings, an average of almost three per game.
If goals are of no question for Dortmund, then what about Frankfurt? Well, Frankfurt have scored in both matches so far this season, with last season’s top scorer Sebastian Haller bagging one goal in each, and if it wasn’t for that early (32nd minute) sending off last time out at home to Werder Bremen then perhaps the Eagles would have even made it to two wins from two.
However, one notable stat about Frankfurt that remains is their defence, which really opens the doors for Dortmund to run riot. Not only have Frankfurt been poor at the back towards the end of last season, conceding 18 goals over their last eight away matches, but they have also started off the 18/19 campaign as vulnerable, allowing the second most shots on goal against them (33) of any side in the Bundesliga.
Ultimately, goals look to be set one way. Dortmund’s offensive strength and historically strong home record (see head-to-head) should see them come out on top of a high scoring affair.
Der BVB are, however, also still unproven defensively since the end of last season – coach Lucien Favre has some work to do on that account, with Dortmund holding just the 8th best defensive record last term – so it wouldn’t be unreasonable to see Frankfurt to get themselves on the scoresheet either. Our prediction a home win for Dortmund.
