Serbia vs Romania, UEFA Nations League, At Rajko Mitić Stadium. Time: 19:45

Serbia comes into this game in relatively good form, after World Cup performances in Russia they can take great heart from.

They beat Costa Rica 1-0 but lost in heart-breaking circumstances to Switzerland, with a last-minute goal meaning that they had to beat Brazil to qualify for the next round. Duly, they lost 2-0 to the Brazilians but competed well and can look back at a number of positives from their journey.

In addition, they beat Lithuania 1-0 away in their first Nations League match, with Dusan Tadic scoring the winning goal through a penalty, although he did miss the second one later in the match.

Despite that, Serbia largely dominated the match, with 24 attempts on goal and 65% possession, albeit against an inferior team they were expected to beat. The only criticism is that they could not put more of those chances away.

Indeed, on paper, Serbia have a really strong squad, with players competing at the apex of European domestic competitions. Moreover, many of these players have started the season well for their respective clubs.

Attackers Dusan Tadic and Alexander Mitrovic have scored several goals since signing for Ajax and Fulham, whilst midfielder Nemanja Matic has been playing very well for Manchester United.

Thus, Serbia are clear favourites to win a group that includes Romania, Montenegro and Lithuania and should be aiming to qualify for Euro 2020.

Another side in good form is Serbia’s opponents, Romania. They are unbeaten in five international matches and will be hoping to take something from this game.

After qualifying for Euro 2016, Romania endured a disappointing campaign in their attempts to compete at the 2018 World Cup. They finished fourth, behind Montenegro, Denmark and Poland, getting a mediocre 13 points from ten games in a group which they should have done better in.

However, recent form suggests that things have improved significantly. They won four games in a row against some tough opponents, which included Chile and Sweden, scoring an average of two a match and keeping two clean sheets.

Moreover, their first Nations League match saw them held to a goalless draw against Montenegro at home. Although a stalemate at home isn’t the best result, they had 18 attempts at goal, which was an improvement on their last result against them, when they lost 1-0 in World Cup qualifying.

However, the fact Montenegro went down to ten men for the last 15 minutes will cause concern for the manager about the side’s ability to break down teams.

In addition, their side isn’t packed with quality, with the most notable player being ex-Spurs defender Vlad Chiriches, now a bit-part player for Napoli. He went off injured after 31 minutes against Montenegro and they will have to rely on their team spirit and character coming up against a tougher opponent.

Indeed, we think Romania’s unbeaten run will come to an end against a superior Serbia side, however, they will not go down without a fight. However, our main prediction for this match is a combo double chance of a home win or draw and under 4.5 goals.
