It was yet more disappointment for new Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on Sunday as he continued his hunt for his first Premier League win. A late comeback from Chelsea saw that hunt extended as they lost 2-1 at the Emirates, which follows on from back to back draws against Everton and Bournemouth to make for a thoroughly underwhelming start for Arteta.
The Gunners now sit 12th in the table, closer to the relegation zone than they are to the top six. This truly is a club in crisis right now, but victory against their old rivals Manchester United may be the catalyst they need to turn their season around.
Unfortunately for them, victory is not looking particularly likely. Arsenal is winless in their last six home league games, conceding 12 goals in the process and losing each of their last three. They have picked up just 13 points from their 10 home games so far, leaving them with the 6th worst home record in the competition. Manchester United aren’t exactly flying high this season, but there have been marked signs of improvement recently.
A 2-0 win against Burnley on Saturday leaves them just four points adrift of the top four, and they have lost only one of their last nine Premier League matches. Away from home, they have won three of their last six league games, but the most telling stat comes from their record against the traditional Big Six. They have lost none of their five matches against the other Big Six sides, winning three of them.
This includes being the only side so far to take a point off Liverpool and victories against Spurs, Manchester City, and Chelsea. In a nutshell, Manchester United knows exactly how to win against teams that are willing to attack them, and Arsenal certainly falls into this category. This approach plays into the Red Devils’ hands, and Arsenal’s defence simply looks incapable of dealing with any sort of pressure.
They have kept just one league clean sheet at home this season and have shipped seven goals in their last three games there. To make matters worse, the likes of Sead Kolasinac, Rob Holding, Kieran Tierney, and Sokratis are likely to miss out through injury, leaving the error-prone duo of David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi to pair up in the centre of defence.
All these signs point towards a Manchester United win, and looking at the odds this looks a nice value bet to go for. Arsenal has, however, scored in all but one of their home games this term, and Manchester United have only kept one clean sheet away from home this term. The visitors have averaged exactly two goals per game against their fellow Big Six opponents this term, so our prediction is Over 1.5 Goals.
