Newcastle United vs Manchester City, England – FA Cup, At St James Park. Time: 18:30
The inevitable finally came to fruition in midweek as Manchester City once again slipped up on the road, losing 2-1 at Chelsea to gift Liverpool their first league title in 30 years.
It’s been a foregone conclusion for a very long time, but the Premier League title is finally on it’s way out of the Etihad and making the short journey over to Anfield. However, having already won the League Cup they still have a chance at a cup treble, starting with this trip to Newcastle for the FA Cup Quarter Finals.
Unsurprisingly Manchester City are overwhelming favourites in the eyes of the bookmakers, but things might not be as straightforward as many expect. The Citizens have actually lost four of their last 11 games in all competitions and three of their last seven away from home.
It’s time to bash the bookies and gradually recover all that you’ve lost to the bookies in the past. Meanwhile, Newcastle finds themselves in an unexpectedly good place. They are a comfortable 12 points clear of the relegation zone and actually look capable of a top-half finish this season, meaning Steve Bruce can select a full-strength squad here without having to worry about a relegation battle.
The Magpies are proving ever more difficult to beat as well. In fact, they have lost just two of their last 15 matches in all competitions, and both of those were away from home. At St James’ Park, this record improves to two defeats in their last 18, so Manchester City doesn’t have an easy task on their hands here.
There are other signs pointing towards a Newcastle shock as well. Their X competitive home games against the current Premier League top six have yielded two wins, three draws and only one defeat – a 3-0 reverse to Leicester back on New Year’s Day – and they have only lost one of their last four home games against Manchester City.
Manchester City last won at St James’ Park back in 2017 in a tight 1-0 victory, and since then they have lost 2-1 and, earlier this season, played out a 2-2 draw. Considering Manchester City have failed to win on eight occasions away from home this season, the odds for a Newcastle win or draw double chance look incredibly generous.
Newcastle does, however, struggle to actually close out victories. The Magpies have drawn nine of their 19 competitive home games this season and, considering Man City have scored in all but two away games, backing a 1-1 correct score prediction looks the way to go.
Isaac Hayden and Matt Ritchie are the latest injury concerns for Steve Bruce after the pair were forced off against Aston Villa. Both Longstaff brothers also missed that match but could feature here, while Jetro Willems remains on the sidelines.
Newcastle predicted lineup: Darlow – Manquillo, Lascelles, Fernandez, Rose – Lazaro, Shelvey, Bentaleb, Saint-Maximin – Almiron – Joelinton
Sergio Aguero could have played his last game of the season for Manchester City while Fernandinho will miss out through suspension after being sent off against Chelsea. Phil Foden will hope to recover in time, while Eric Garcia could also return for the first time since his head injury in the first game back. Leroy Sane is expected to leave this summer but could start on the left here to give Raheem Sterling a rest.
Manchester City predicted lineup: Bravo – Cancelo, Otamendi, Garcia, Zinchenko – Rodri, D. Silva, B. Silva – Foden, Sane, Jesus.
Prediction: Our prediction is a +3 goals Handicap advantage for Newcastle, this means Newcastle wins if they do not lose by more than 2 goals difference.
