A close encounter was anticipated between Real Madrid and Valencia in Thursday’s opening Supercopa semi-final, but Los Blancos failed to read the script as they ran out convincing 1-3 winners in Jeddah.

Zinedine Zidane’s side were rampant from the word go as they turned in one of their best performances of the campaign, while Los Che, unbeaten in seven going into the contest, froze like rabbits caught in the headlights.

Toni Kroos used quick thinking and superb technique to score directly from a corner 15 minutes in as oblivious Valencia keeper Jaume Domenech faffed around off his line before Isco slotted home six minutes before the break to effectively end the most one-sided of contests.

The icing was spectacularly put on the cake midway through the second half though, as Luka Modric fooled two Valencian defenders before coolly beating Domenech with the outside of his right foot.

A stoppage-time penalty from Dani Parejo made the scoreline look a little more respectable for Los Che, but it was no more than a scant consolation as Real sealed their progress to Sunday’s final, and in the process extended their unbeaten streak in all competitions to 15 matches (W10, D5).

After last season’s Copa Del Rey winners were dispatched on Wednesday night, reigning La Liga champions Barcelona fell by the wayside in Thursday’s second semi-final, thanks to a stunning late comeback from Atletico Madrid.

Outplayed for much of the contest, Atleti found themselves 2-1 down with 25 minutes to go after Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann netted in response to Koke’s fIrst half strike against the run of play, and Los Rojiblancos had Jan Oblak and VAR to thank for keeping them in the game.

Diego Simeone’s side showed their resilience though to peg Barca back in the latter stages, and following Alvaro Morata’s equaliser from the spot on 81 minutes, Atleti stole it five minutes from time when Barca was unable to clear Angel Correa’s lob over keeper Neto.

The result marked Atleti’s fifth straight win in all competitions, and their new look side appears to be going from strength to strength now following difficult autumn.

Real were undoubtedly more impressive than Atletico in midweek, although the manner of Atleti’s triumph against the champions will give them a huge amount of confidence and momentum going into Sunday’s final in Saudi Arabia.

These Madrilenian giants often serve up closely run affairs, and we expect more of the same this weekend after four draws in the last six derbies, including a 0-0 stalemate at Wanda Metropolitano in La Liga earlier this season. Both teams are in excellent form, and neither can be opposed over the 90 minutes here.

We’re predicting another draw this Sunday which will lead us to extra time, although we feel both teams will get on the scoresheet. That’s been the case in four of Real’s last six matches away from the Bernabeu and in six of Atleti’s last eight outings outside of Wanda, so our prediction is a win or a draw for Real Madrid.
