Just over a week ago Lyon found themselves in Portugal contesting a Champions League semi-final against the dominant Bayern Munich, but with that 3-0 thumping fresh in their memories their attention must now turn back to domestic action as they get their Ligue 1 campaign underway.
The hosts suffered a disappointing league campaign last season as the majority of their focus was taken up by their Champions League success. Eventually, they finished 7th in the table after a coronavirus enforced abandonment of Ligue 1, meaning they miss out on European football despite their run to the semi-finals.
While this is certainly not ideal, what it will do is allow Les Gones to focus solely on returning to Europe’s premier competition. Another 7th place finish is unlikely, especially with the likes of Memphis Depay, Moussa Dembele, Houssem Aouar, and Maxence Caqueret still in their ranks.
