Bayern Munich finished just two points ahead of Borussia Dortmund in the title race last season, so Niko Kovac will no doubt be eager to gain an early lead on Der BVB in the new campaign, particularly after their 2-0 defeat to them in the German Super Cup a few weeks back.
Robert Lewandowski, who was the Bundesliga’s leading scorer last term, got his first goal of 19/20 in a comfortable 3-1 win over fourth-tier Energie Cottbus in the DFB Pokal on Monday. That bodes well for Bayern as he looks to end his four-game goal drought against Hertha Berlin. Newcomers Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez should be on show in defence, but latest addition Ivan Perisic is suspended.
Hertha Berlin will be confident enough in their trip down to Bavaria after having taken points off Bayern in each of the past three seasons. Hertha was equally convincing in their 5-1 DFB Pokal win over fourth-tier Eichstatt on Sunday, which was Hertha’s first competitive fixture since Ante Covic replaced Pal Dardai as head coach.
Veteran forward Vedad Ibisevic got two goals in that game, but all eyes will be on fresh-faced Dodi Lukebakio, who was signed from Fortuna Dusseldorf over the summer. Interestingly, he scored a hat-trick for Dusseldorf in a 3-3 draw against Bayern at the Allianz Arena last term.
Bayern is, unsurprisingly, big favourites to win on the Bundesliga opening day all the same. Hertha has left Bavaria with 0 points in around 80% of the prior meetings there after all. However, we do feel that the visitors are of good value to sneak a goal in this game.
Bayern may have strengthened the squad with a few new defenders to address last season’s defensive problems – Bayern kept a clean sheet in just 41% of their Bundesliga home games – but pre-season form shows that these signings are yet to have much impact. Bayern conceded goals in all but one of their games over the summer and even conceded against Cottbus with a full-strength team during the week.
Hertha head into this having made the most of the transfer window too. Covic’s men were banging them in for fun during pre-season – they scored three past West Ham and four past Palace in their last two friendlies – and showed absolutely no slowing down in their cup game last weekend.
This should translate to a positive opening day performance from Hertha, and with both teams scoring in 59% of their Bundesliga matches last season, that’s the bet we’re going for here. Bayern did, however, have the most dominant home record in 18/19, scoring three or more in 65% of games there, so it’s hard to look past them for the win. Our prediction is a home win for Bayern.
