Manchester v West Brom Player Rating: Woeful United Loss To Bottom Club West Brom

After an amazing victory over Manchester City last week to delay they been crowned the Champions of the English Premier League, Manchester United in the most uneventful and unexpected manner possible handed the crown to Manchester city through an inexcusable 1-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils were simply far too complacent and non-challant against the basement club in the Premier League and were dealt with in a deserving manner.

West Brom came into the match with an intention to defend and attack only on the counter. The baggies frustrated Manchester United who could not fashion out any clear-cut chances apart some balls lobbed towards Romelu Lukaku to chase.

The match continued with United playing without any form of conviction and sense of purpose and in the 73rd minute, the unexpected happened, when the Baggies broke the deadlock through a corner kick which was brought down by Craig Dawson, who rose above Antonio Valencia and squared the ball with his head to Jay Rodriguez who connected well with the ball to head home for West Brom.

Jose Mourinho’s made all the substitution at his disposal to try and salvage the situation, but the Baggies remained resilient and held on for a memorable victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford. The win rekindled West Brom’s slim chances of surviving relegation this season.

Here is how the performance of each Manchester United player is rated:

David De Gea – 6/10

He had little to do all through the match and can not be faulted for the goal that was conceded by United.

Antonio Valencia – 6/10

Valencia squared up well against Jame McClean but didn’t contribute much going forward.

Chris Smalling – 6/10

He was solid enough to checkmate the offence threat of Salomon Rondon and nearly gave United the equaliser late in the match.

Victor Lindelof – 6/10

He was decent on the day and held his own the few times the United defence came under pressure.

Ashley Young – 6/10

He was lively down the left side of attack and delivered some quality crosses into the opposition’s vital area.

Nemanja Matic – 5/10

Matic wasn’t at his best, he was a bit slow to track back and help the defence, the few times the Baggies threatened on the counter. He didn’t dominate the midfield area in a manner expected of him.

Ander Herrera – 7/10

He had a great game in midfield and made some sweet passes. He also almost earned United a penalty. This was one of his better games in the colours of the Red devil’s.

Paul Pogba – 6/10

He was lively and looked to possess the touch to unlock the resilient Baggies defence. However, it was a shock to see him been substituted in the 58th minute by Anthony martial.

Juan Mata – 5/10

Mata was quite ineffective in the match. He lost possession unnecessarily and could not carve out any clear-cut opportunity for Lukaku.

Alexis Sanchez – 5/10

Yet another night to forget for the Chilean. He saw a lot of the ball but could not do anything meaningful with it. He struggled to break the West Brom’s defence with little or success.

Romelu Lukaku – 5/10

The Big Belgian was left isolated up front, he was starved of quality service and was easily overpowered the few times he got the ball in the Baggies vital area.

Substitutes:

Jesse Lingard – 6/10

He tried to shake up the watertight West Brom defence but was not a success as most of his shots were blocked by the opposition defence.

Anthony Martial – 5/10

He troubled the opposing defence a bit with some quick and fanciful footwork, but the end product was not meaningful.

Marcus Rashford – 4/10

He came on for Ashley Young in the 75th minute but could not make any meaningful contribution worthy of mention.
