Liverpool scored five well-taken goals and conceded two late goals to allow Roma claw back into contention and offer them a ray of hope in the Champions League semi-final first leg at Anfield to set up a fascinating second leg in Rome next week.

The Egyptian magician Mohamed Salah was the hero of the day, as he scored twice against his former club and also provided two assists before he was substituted, Jurgen Klopp will be bitting his nails and pondering how on earth his side allow Roma a route back into an encounter that looked almost dead and buried.

Excellent in Defence and impressive in attack, the young right-back was lively and threatening throughout the match.

He was at fault for Roma’s first goal as he misjudged the pass and allowed Dzeko to score at the near post.

Virgil van Dijk – 7/10

A masterclass display from the big Dutch defender. He got Liverpool moving forward with some excellent switches of play

Andrew Robertson – 7/10

Bumped forward relentlessly like his life depended on it, he was solid at the back but missed one gilt-edged chance with the score still at 3-0.

He had a nasty head injury after a collision with Aleksandar Kolarov and was taken off after only 18 minutes, but hopefully will be fit for the return leg in Rome next week.

Danny Ings – 4/10

He surprisingly came on to replace Salah in the 75th minute, he didn’t make any contribution worthy of mention in the match. He was virtually anonymous in the right-wing position

He was a stoppage-time replacement for Firmino as Klopp made sure Liverpool didn’t concede a third by running down the clock.
