It was always likely to come down to this match in Group G of the 2018 World Cup. Ever since the draw was made and the fixtures announced the clash between England and Belgium has been hailed as the one that will decide the group winner, but coming into the final game not many expected it to be quite so tight.
The two nations have both picked up six points from their two games so far, but they have also scored eight goals apiece and conceded three. This leaves England top of the group due to the fact they have picked up fewer yellow cards, and a draw in Kaliningrad would see the group winner decided on the Fair Play tiebreaker.

That being said, it’s debatable whether either team actually wants to win the group. Due to the likes of Germany and Argentina both failing to perform, the top half of the knockout stage bracket is looking incredibly tough.
Group G winners would enter this half of the bracket, along with the likes of Uruguay, Portugal, and probably Brazil, and France. Meanwhile, the only footballing superpower in the other half of the draw is likely to be Spain, paving a much smoother path to the final in Moscow.
It’s unlikely that either team will purposefully go out to lose the game, but what it could mean is that both England and Belgium opt to heavily rotate their squad, knowing that defeat wouldn’t be the end of the world at all.
Roberto Martinez has already stated that he’ll rotate and with Dries Mertens, Eden Hazard, and Romelu Lukaku all carrying apparent knocks they could be out of action.
England’s Harry Kane will be desperate to play as he chases the Golden Boot, but we could see the likes of Phil Jones, Eric Dier, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Marcus Rashford come into the starting lineup here.
To be honest, both of these sides have looked very impressive going forward so far, albeit against much weaker sides. England spurned a host of chances early on against Tunisia but still managed to put two past them, whilst Belgium scored five against the Africans and could have had five more as well.
Panama, on the other hand, held Belgium off for the entirety of the first half, whereas England was 5-0 up against them by the time the half-time whistle blew.
Although, despite their dominance, England once again failed to keep a clean sheet. Considering that Belgium conceded two against Tunisia as well, we think this could be a high scoring affair if both teams start with their star players.
However we feel that both teams will rest their key players and we may not see a high scoring match as expected, hence our main prediction is Under 1.5 goals at fulltime.
