Borussia Monchengladbach is off to their best start to a Bundesliga campaign in four years having taken 14 points from 7 games and their clinical display just before the international break showed positive signs of things to come. Monchengladbach’s 3-0 win at the Allianz Arena against Bayern Munich was their first win on the road this season and it saw forward Alassane Plea truly cement his name as one of the signings of the summer.

He bagged his fifth goal of the season in that game and is expected to start up front once again alongside captain Lars Stindl, who also found the back of the net in that game after returning from injury. Belgian winger Thorgan Hazard will complete the attacking three as Gladbach look to continue their perfect start to the season at Borussia Park.

Mainz 05 is at the opposite end of the scales. Sandro Schwarz’s men are tough to watch and ground out yet another goalless draw at home to Hertha Berlin in their last Bundesliga outing. A lack of goals are the main concern – the 05ers have only managed four in seven games so far. Panic mode is yet to set in, but there’s no denying that they’re fortunate to stand where they are.

Mainz are running way over expectation defensively – expected goals (xG) says they should have conceded around double the amount they have (8 instead of 4) – and tight results against even some of the weaker sides in the division, such as a 1-1 draw away to newly promoted Nurnberg, shows how little they have to offer. Have the 05ers riden a wave of form that can’t be maintained?

So, what are we looking betting-wise in this match? Well, we feel that the most obvious angle is in the under 2.5 goals market for the following reasons: we’ve already covered Mainz’s attacking record, but it’s their defensive record that raises some eyebrows.

As we said before, the 05ers have been fortunate to only have conceded four goals this season, but if we go off expected goals conceded (8), Mainz would still hold the joint 2nd best defensive record in the league.

Now that’s not to say that Borussia Monchengladbach won’t be able to find a way through – in fact, with the in-form Plea and Hazard having netted 14 competitive goals so far this season, it’d be hard to bet against them.

However, it does mean that Mainz’s defence (and probably defensive set up) will decide the flow of this game. And with under 2.5 goals scored in 86% of Mainz’s matches so far, there has to be some value in that for Sunday.

Although, Gladbach are no doubt the better side of the two, and expecting them to continue their strong home form against a side like Mainz isn’t too much of a stretch of the imagination. Mainz have failed to score in all of their last four Bundesliga outings and this could be a tough trend to buck against a Monchengladbach side that kept a clean sheet away to giants Bayern Munich last time out.

And the fact that three of Mainz’s four goals this season have come from substitutes says something about the quality that they have available to field in the first place. All in all, unfortunately, it’s tough to see this being a thriller. Mainz set the record for fewest goals in their opening seven matches and all the signs point towards this streak continuing. Our prediction is a home win or draw for Borussia Monchengladbach.
