AS Monaco vs Lille OSC, France – Ligue 1, At Stade Louis II. Time: 19:00
Both teams got a 3-1 win on the opening day of the league and will want to continue that, but this is still a mismatch if last season’s standings are anything to go by.
Monaco finished as Ligue 1 runners-up last season behind PSG, failing to retain their title of the year before. They lost their star striker Kylian Mbappé permanently in the summer but the principality club hasn’t been afraid to reinvest the €135m transfer fee into the squad.
They’ve used a bulk of the over €300m that they’ve made through transfer fees this summer to bring in the likes of Jean-Eudes Aholou and Russia’s World Cup star Aleksandr Golovin but also some hot prospects for the future in Jonathan Panzo and Willem Geubbels from Chelsea and Lyon respectively.

With the loss of a possible future Ballon d’Or winner in Mbappé, manager Leonardo Jardim and the Monaco hierarchy have done the right thing by bringing in both players that are going to improve the current squad but also those who will seep into the team over the next few years.
And their signings are already impressing with Aholou and Sofiane Diop contributing in the strong win and Samuel Grandsir getting a debut assist. Monaco wasn’t fantastic though and there is still work to be done as they only had 33% of the possession, fewer shots, corners and one of the lowest pass accuracies of the opening weekend.
This win was made more by the killer instinct of a few individuals rather than the whole squad, but these experienced heads will give the new boys time to mix into the squad. Monaco closed out last season with three consecutive wins and will be looking to continue that form after a disappointing 4-0 loss to PSG in the French Super Cup final could have potentially thrown them off course.
The three-time Ligue 1 champions Lille showed how the great had fallen with a turbulent 2017/18 campaign which saw them have two managers, only 14 away points and a torrid 17th place finish, one point above the relegation play-off place.
Now under the management of Christoph Galtier, who was once the longest-serving manager in Ligue 1 with Saint-Etienne where he was once the longest-serving manager in Ligue 1 with Saint-Etienne where he took charge of over 350 games, Lille will be hoping that he can bring them the long-term success that he brought to the Verts.
With many players jumping ship in the summer after Lille’s disappointing campaign last year, Galtier has chosen to follow in the footsteps of Monaco. The club has had their most profitable selling transfer window so far with £48m brought in through the departures of Yves Bissouma and Ibrahim Amodou amongst others.
Five of their eight subsequent signings have been 22 or younger and Galtier is clearly trying to build a squad with a mix of experienced pragmatism, the type you get with signings like José Fonte and Loïc Rémy but also the inexperienced optimism of hot prospects such as Jonathan Ikoné and Rafael Leão.
And like Monaco, the signings looked comfortable in their opening match as they drifted past last year’s fifth-placed team Rennes with swift attacking interplay. Their front four operated as a fantastic unit with them being so fluid that Nicolas Pepe achieved more shots on target than the entire Stade Rennais side.
The Ivorian also had the most take-on with five completed and with all this on top of his well-taken goal, he will be a dangerous target that the Monaco defence will have to keep an eye on all match.
Despite Lille looking like a completely different team to the one which finished 17th last season. We’re going to back a Monaco win in this one due to them having largely the better squad and the second-best home record last year.
They didn’t manage to get going at their full potential last match against Nantes, but they still got the win and this experience is what we think might get them another victory here. They’ve won the last five of these fixtures with a little reply and we expect them to continue that this time around. The northerners should get a goal though as their attack was deadly in the last match. Our main prediction is a home win or draw.
