Union Berlin has had no such worries, now a very established Bundesliga 2 club, entering their 9th consecutive season in the German second tier. Union have balanced a number of outgoing transfers (see team news) with some clever purchases from Bundesliga sides Hannover 96, Hoffenheim and SC Freiburg.

Some of those players featured in their opener at home to Erzgebirge Aue last weekend, but it was midfielder Felix Kroos, brother of Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos, who came off the bench to score the only goal in the 1-0 win.

Looking ahead to Cologne’s first home match in the Bundesliga 2 since 2014, there are a couple of key factors that make us feel that this match will be worth tuning in for. Firstly, the hosts’ new boss, former-Holstein Kiel manager Markus Anfang, has a very attacking philosophy.

Kiel may have failed to win promotion to the Bundesliga through the playoffs at the end of last season, but his side finished third with the best goal difference in the league (+27 with 71 goals scored). His entertaining brand of football saw 76% of Kiel’s matches end with over 2.5 goals scored, while 65% of them ended with both teams scoring.

Cologne’s 2-0 win over Bochum last weekend showed that same fiery, aggressive style and the Billy Goats were somewhat lucky not to concede after being down to 10-men in the 70th minute.

Anfang’s men should follow the same offensive approach to put on a show for the home fans on Monday, and the Billy Goats have the goalscoring talent to back them up. Cologne’s Simon Terodde is the Cameron Jerome of the Bundesliga, too good for the second tier, but not really good enough for the top flight.

However, against a Union Berlin side who are consistent in finding the back of the net on the road – the Berliners scored at least one goal in all but two away matches last season – the Billy Goats aggression and lack of defensive form may get exposed. However, our prediction is a home win or draw.
