Manchester United vs Chelsea FC, England – FA Cup, At Wembley Stadium. Time: 18:00
Manchester United and Chelsea are chasing success along similar trajectories this season, and on Sunday, the clubs competing for a top-four Premier League finish will contest a semi-final in the last four of the 2019/20 FA Cup.
With a taxing fixture schedule pushing players and stretching resources to the limit, both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Frank Lampard have decisions to make about the teams they choose to field at Wembley, with both managers expected to make changes to their XIs with more pressing league commitments in mind.
United and Chelsea have already met three times this season in two Premier League and one Carabao Cup fixtures, and though the Mancunians emerged as victors from all three ties, the sides looked incredibly well-matched in each contest, including the hugely flattering 4-0 Red Devils victory in their season opener in August last year.
It’s time to bash the bookies and gradually recover all that you’ve lost to the bookies in the past. United prepared for their semi-final slugfest with a hard-fought 2-0 triumph at Crystal Palace on Thursday evening, thanks to first and second-half goals from in-form attacking pair Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
Just as they did against Southampton days earlier, however, United looked a little sluggish against the Eagles, and there were signs that fatigue could be taking its toll on a set of players that Solskjaer has been reluctant to rotate since the restart.
At the back, United looked particularly laboured, with the same gaps opened up by Southampton on Monday, exploited by a Crystal Palace frontline that was unlucky not to score.
However, at the sharp end of their play, United’s forwards continued to dazzle with the aforementioned Rashford and Martial combining brilliantly with Bruno Fernandes.
Chelsea too looked less than convincing in their narrow 1-0 win over already-relegated Norwich City at Stamford Bridge on Monday evening.
Nerves seemed to have an impact on the Blues’ finishing and passing in the final third, and there was also evidence to suggest that Chelsea’s confidence was knocked by their harrowing 3-0 reverse at Sheffield United three days earlier.
Chelsea’s defeat at Bramall Lane was doubly unusual in that it was the only time in the club’s last 11 assignments where they failed to score, though we don’t expect the Blues to draw another blank at Wembley on Sunday.
With both Manchester United’s and Chelsea’s biggest strengths found in forward areas, both teams to score market is worth considering for Sunday’s semi-final
United, who have scored in 16 consecutive fixtures since their 0-0 draw with Wolves on February 1, has already shown in three meetings with Chelsea this season, that they have the tools to unlock the Blues’ defence.
However, with their defence continuing to give up chances, and second choice stopper Sergio Romero likely to start between the sticks, their chances of keeping the Blues off the scoresheet for the third time this term feel slim.
Alongside our both teams to score prediction for Sunday, our correct score prediction forecasts a 1-1 draw – a result that would take the tie to extra time.
Fatigue, nervousness, and two possibly reshuffled starting XIs should combine to make Sunday’s semi a keenly contested and tense affair, and it could take penalties to determine who takes a spot in the FA Cup final.
First choice Chelsea right-back César Azpilicueta featured when Marcus Rashford scored twice for United from the left-hand side in his team’s 4-0 win over the Blues last August, and though the Spaniard has a great deal of experience, Frank Lampard might choose to field the pacier Reece James in an attempt to combat Rashford’s explosive runs.
James has enjoyed a breakout season with Chelsea in 2019/20 and the club’s academy starlet has appeared 32 times in all competitions since August. James has adapted brilliantly to life at the top-level, though a test against Marcus Rashford would represent one of his biggest challenges of the season.
Rashford has already plundered for goals in total in two appearances against Chelsea this season, and fresh from a wonderfully taken goal and an assist against Crystal Palace in mid-week, the wide attacker looks primed to be United’s match-definer again.
Left backs Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams both missed United’s mid-week win over Crystal Palace, though the younger of that aforementioned duo has a better chance of returning this weekend.
Elsewhere, specialist cup keeper Sergio Romero should start in goal ahead of David de Gea, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could restore Nemanja Matic to his team after the Serbian started from the bench against the Eagles.
Fred and Daniel James will also hope to be involved from the start.
Manchester United predicted line-up: Romero – Wan-Bissaka- Lindelof, Maguire, Williams – Matic, Pogba, Fernandes – James, Rashford, Martial
Billy Gilmour has been ruled out for Chelsea, though N’Golo Kante could be fit enough to feature after a short time out.
Like his rival in the opposite dugout, Frank Lampard has decisions to make over a number of personnel, with Tammy Abraham, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Pedro all pushing to start.
Chelsea predicted line-up: Arrizabalaga – James Rudiger, Zouma, Alonso – Jorginho, Mount, Kovacic – Willian, Pulisic, Abraham
Prediction: Our prediction for this match is Over 1.5 Goals.
