Leicester City vs Crystal Palace, England – Premier League, At King Power Stadium. Time: 15:00
Leicester City’s limp restart continued in mid-week when the Foxes were turned over 2-1 by Everton at Goodison Park – a result that stretched their winless run to four matches since the 2019/20 season kicked back into gear last month.
Any thought of attributing their poor results to post-hiatus rustiness can be dismissed however, when you consider that City have now won just four of their last 16 fixtures in all competitions, in what has been an extended period of poor form that started all the way back in early January.
With Jamie Vardy’s killer touch almost abandoning him completely, and final third contributors James Maddison and Ayoze Perez also in the midst of lengthy dry spells, the current lack of goals in Leicester’s team is threatening to scupper an entire year of good work in the campaign’s final weeks.
It’s time to bash the bookies and gradually recover all that you’ve lost to the bookies in the past. Leicester’s return of just one win from eight Premier League assignments has allowed the chasing pack behind them to close in, and ahead of their latest test against Palace on Saturday, there is just a three-point spread between the Foxes in 3rd and Wolves in 6th.
Crystal Palace endured a tough week of their own after successive defeats to nil against newly crowned Premier League champions Liverpool (0-4) and fellow mid-table dwellers Burnley (0-1) – results that combined to send the Eagles nosediving to 14th position in the standings.
Palace’s loss at Anfield was just their third defeat in 10 on the road, however, and having taken points at Man Utd, Arsenal and Man City earlier this term, Roy Hodgson’s men will arrive at the King Power Stadium as confident travellers this week.
Before their brace of setbacks against Burnley and Liverpool, Palace had been one of the Premier League’s form teams, winning four matches on the bounce without conceding a single goal in games against Newcastle, Brighton, Watford, and Bournemouth – and we think circumstances could allow the Eagles to pick up another positive result this weekend.
Leicester City are in a real slump right now and their run of just four wins in 16 fixtures since January 8 looks even worse when you consider that two of those victories were in the FA Cup against Championship opposition.
The Foxes’ only triumphs in eight Premier League attempts at the King Power Stadium came against relegation candidates West Ham and Aston Villa, while dropped points there against Norwich, Southampton, and Brighton during that period highlights a vulnerability that Crystal Palace will feel they can exploit.
The Eagles avoided defeat in nine of their last 13 Premier League assignments as the visiting team, and with Leicester continuing to flounder, Palace looks excellent value in the double chance market this week which is currently better than evens, while our correct score prediction points towards a 1-1 draw.
Leicester City’s results have been regressing at home, though their record of scoring in 12 of their last 15 Premier League fixtures at the King Power Stadium suggests they should find the net.
Palace, who shipped one or fewer goals in 70% of their last 10 on the road are unlikely to be bowled over by a City side lacking thrust, however, having averaged a meagre 1.0 goals per game across their last eight away contests, a single goal looks about the upper limit of the Eagles’ attacking capabilities.
Jamie Vardy didn’t register a single attempt on goal in Leicester’s midweek defeat at Goodison Park, and the veteran’s off-colour performances are severely hampering the Foxes’ top four prospects.
The veteran poacher has now scored just twice in his last 13 appearances, with both of those goals arriving in the same comfortable 4-0 City victory over Aston Villa in March.
With Vardy’s goals absent, the wins have also dried up for Leicester, and Brendan Rodgers will be desperate for his talisman to return to form as quickly as possible.
James Maddison came off the bench in Leicester’s mid-week loss at Everton and should be restored to the starting XI on Saturday.
With Jamie Vardy horribly out of form, Brendan Rodgers could be tempted to go with Kelechi Iheanacho upfront. With options thin on the ground, the Foxes team elsewhere picks itself, however.
Leicester predicted line-up: Schmeichel – Justin, Evans, Soyuncu, Chilwell – Ndidi, Tielemans, Praet, Barnes, Maddison – Vardy
James Tomkins, Martin Kelly, and Jeffrey Schlupp are still in the Palace treatment room, while Christian Benteke is still rated as doubtful.
Following successive defeats, Roy Hodgson might feel the need to make a tweak or two, though the Eagles shallow squad is hard to rotate.
Crystal Palace predicted line-up: Hennessey – Ward, Dann, Cahill, van Aanholt – Milivojevic, McArthur, Koyate, Townsend, Zaha – Ayew
Prediction: Our prediction is that Crystal Palace will not lose by more than a single goal difference. A +2 goals Handicap advantage for Crystal palace.
