A more emphatic 4-1 triumph at Arsenal in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Tuesday followed hot on the heels of City’s success at St. Mary’s Stadium, though the Gunners were generous hosts in what proved a very one-sided tie.
Newcastle endured a difficult time against two of the Premier League’s newest combatants in their last pair of top-flight fixtures, and after the Magpies were dismantled 5-2 at Leeds on December 16, they dropped more points in a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Fulham shortly after.
Like City, Newcastle were also involved in the mid-week Carabao Cup mix, though United were dumped out of the quarter-final by Championship side Brentford following a limp performance at the Community Stadium that saw Steve Bruce’s side lose 1-0.
Manchester City are understandably massive favourites to claim three points from their Boxing Day clash with Newcastle, though the evidence they have provided so far this season suggests we shouldn’t expect a wide margin victory at the Etihad Stadium.

Eric Garcia is Pep Guardiola’s only major injury worry ahead of the Boxing Day welcome of Newcastle and the Citizens has a few selection headaches to contend with as a result.
Sergio Aguero, who came off the bench in mid-week, could come back into the starting XI in place of Gabriel Jesus, while John Stones should return to the team in central defence.
