Manchester United vs Crystal Palace, England – Premier League, At Old Trafford, Time: 17:30
The regularly criticised and often lampooned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defied his many detractors last season when he led Manchester United to a third-place Premier League finish that most had claimed was beyond their capabilities.
In a final flourish inspired by the signing Bruno Fernandes, United embarked on a 14-game unbeaten run between February and July, clawing back and eventually overtaking their rivals to secure Champions League football for this season.
Only title winners Liverpool and runners up Man City lost fewer Premier League games than United overall in 2019/20, while the additions of Harry Maguire and former Eagle Aaron-Wan Bissaka also helped the Red Devils to finish with the division’s third-best defensive record despite David de Gea’s numerous gaffes.
It’s time to bash the bookies and gradually recover all that you’ve lost to the bookies in the past. However, with ex-Ajax star Donny van de Beek the only signing of note, a modest summer recruitment drive has left United’s squad looking light, and matching or improving on the club’s third place finish could prove difficult this time around.
In contrast to their hosts, Crystal Palace limped over the line last season, losing seven and drawing one of their final eight fixtures in a dreadful climax that saw them end up in 14th place after a brief flirtation with a top-half finish.
However, the Eagles made the most of their clean slate in their 2020/21 Premier League opener last weekend when they ground out a 1-0 win at home to Southampton thanks to an early effort from talismanic winger Wilfried Zaha.
Palace, who were left short at the back through injury issues, needed plenty of help from stopper and man of the match Vincent Guaita to keep the Saints at bay, however, though the victory, which was a triumph of determination, was a confidence-building way to start the season.
Man Utd were beaten only twice in 19 Premier League games at Old Trafford last term, though Roy Hodgson’s counter-punching Palace team accounted for one of the two blots on United’s home copybook.
The Eagles, who racked up just five attempts to United’s 22 on the day, battled their way to a 2-1 win in late August 2019 – and while that was their first and only victory against the Red Devils in 14 encounters since their promotion back to the Premier League in 2013, Palace has regularly proved tricky opponents for the Manchester giants.
Both Palace and United found the net in three of the last five meetings between the clubs, while the Mancunians plundered two or fewer goals in 10 of their 14 skirmishes with the Eagles over the past six years.
On Saturday, we expect Palace’s rapid frontline to test their host’s slow centre on the counter-attack and Wilfried Zaha and co should create enough chances to register, however keeping United out at the other end should prove a much more difficult task.
In Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial, and Marcus Rashford, United have an attacking trident that is fast developing into one of the Premier League’s most formidable strike-forces, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side should have sufficient firepower to blow holes in a Palace defence missing several key players.
With those factors aligned and the clubs’ record of closely contested fixtures considered, both teams to score market looks excellent value for Saturday’s tussle at the Theatre of Dreams, though we like the look of a 2-1 home win for our correct score prediction.
United’s 14-Premier League match unbeaten run at the end of last season was a confidence-building surge of results, and with all of their big hitters available to play, including Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba, the Red Devils possess enough star quality to eventually turn over a Palace team that won only two of their last 12 games on the road.
