Bundesliga 2 champions Cologne made their return to the German top-flight last weekend against a Wolfsburg side they’ve had trouble beating in recent years – not an ideal opening fixture. Achim Beierlorzer’s side put up a good fight for most of the game but it took veteran forward Simon Terrode (29 goals in 33 appearances in 18/19) off the bench for Cologne to break through and grab a consolation goal in the 2-1 defeat.
Despite this, Cologne is expected to continue playing proven Bundesliga goalscorer Anthony Modeste up front on his own. He scored a combined 40 goals for Cologne over the 15/16 and 16/17 seasons before returning to the club after a year in China. Notably, he also scored two goals against Dortmund over that spell, one at Signal Iduna Park and one at the RheinEnergieArena, where the two sides face off on Friday.

Dortmund made another huge statement for the new Bundesliga season when they beat Augsburg 5-1 last weekend. Coach Lucien Favre fielded the same team that had successfully seen off Uerdingen in the first round of the DFB Pokal just over a week back and, more impressively, also beat Bayern Munich 2-0 in the 19/20 campaign opening Super Cup match, and they looked more dangerous than ever.
Augsburg were the ones to open the scoring, though. Perhaps it was their goal within a minute of kicking off that only spurred Dortmund on. Paco Alcacer, their top scorer last season, drew them level less than three minutes later and Jadon Sancho, Marco Reus and new signing Julian Brandt also all got themselves on the scoresheet in what was a very dominant performance. Cologne will only be too aware of these big-name players going into this.
Cologne will take solace in the fact that they have a strong record at home to Dortmund, they’ve only lost twelve times over 44 meetings in front of their own fans after all (W22 D10 L12). However, their confidence may be misplaced when looking at their post-2004 record. Cologne has lost 66% of matches against Der BVB since the 05/06 season and Dortmund had the second-best away record in the Bundesliga last season too.
Another thing that we have to note from last weekend is that Favre’s men still conceded even with Hummels back in amongst the mix. Dortmund’s main weakness last season was a lack of clean sheets – in fact, they kept a clean sheet in just 29% of their matches overall – so in combination with one of the most ruthless attacks in the Bundesliga we saw ‘both teams to score’ becoming a very common occurrence – in fact,’ a bet on that landed in 68% of their games last season.
As such, the best bet for this game looks to be in backing Dortmund alongside ‘both teams to score’. Cologne’s attack – headlined by marquee forward Modeste – does look strong enough to get a goal against a mistake-prone Dortmund backline, but with Der BVB scoring goals for fun, we like them to come out on top.
