‘Simy’ Nwankwo On Fire, Scores Hat-trick For Crotone

The Nigeria international Simeon Nwankwo popularly called Simy was in superb form for his Italian Serie B club Crotone at the Stadio Ezio Scida as he scored a hat-trick that powered Crotone to a 3-0 victory over Serie B leaders Benevento on Friday night.

The 28-year-old’s goals secured the Pythagoreans’ first win since the restart of the Italian second division after three consecutive draws.

Simy netted two quick-fire goals in the 14th and 18th minute of the encounter to put the hosts ahead at the Stadio Ezio Scida and in the 70th minute, he scored another goal to complete his hat-trick.

The hat-trick increased the goal haul of the Super Eagles forward to 16 goals after 31 league appearances this season and he is currently enjoying his best goalscoring run in Italy since his arrival from Portuguese outfit Gil Vicente in the summer of 2016. Simy was in the tick of action for nearly 81 minutes before he was substituted by Samuel Armenteros.

The win has boosted Crotone promotion aspirations, although they remain unmoved in the league standings as they sit second behind runaway leaders Benevento with 55 points from 32 games.

Crotone and Simy will be aiming to build on Friday’s victory when they visit fourth-place Cittadella for their next league fixture on Friday, July 10.

Simy has been frozen out of the Super Eagles setup since Nigeria’s group-stage exit at the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia, he has not been invited by Gernot Rohr to the Super Eagles team.

Simy played just two minutes in two games at the World cup in Russia, coming on as a late second-half substitute against both Croatia and Argentina which ended in defeats for the Super Eagles as they were dumped out of the first round.
