France vs USA International Friendly At Groupama Stadium, Lyon. Time: 20:00 GMT
Les Bleus’ World Cup preparations could hardly have gone any better. Deschamps men began warming up by walking all over Ireland, winning by the most comfortable of 2-0 score-lines, while they stepped things up a gear last time out when beating Italy by three goals to one. The attacking strength of the current France squad is there for all to see, so they ought to have their eye on another flamboyant display before travelling to Russia in search of football’s biggest prize.

Unlike the French, USA won’t be at the World Cup. After a dismal qualifying campaign, where the Americans laboured their way to a poor finish, things have been freshened up. Interim boss Dave Sarachan opted for a youthful approach against Bolivia recently, an approach that paid dividends when his young side ran out comfortable 3-0 winners. However, USMNT disappointed last time out when losing 2-1 against Ireland, a team who were frankly no match for France just a couple of weeks ago.
Had USA come into this fixture off the back of their 3-0 win over Bolivia, it would’ve been easy to see them at least getting competitive, though after they lost to an Ireland team who delivered an effort that was nothing short of pathetic in France just a fortnight ago, it’s hard to feel that the visitors can trouble Deschamps’ explosive and seemingly unforgiving side.
Pace, power and direct play have been the theme for Les Bleus in their two previous warm-up matches, and they’re unlikely to stray from this approach against a USA side that is none too clever at the back.
Away from the comforts of home, defending has been something of an issue for the USA of late. The visitors arrive in France having conceded in each of their last four on the road. They did draw 1-1 away against Portugal in their penultimate away match, but that was more to do with their opponents missing chances, as opposed to any defensive solidity on their part, so such a result shouldn’t lead people to believe that this is a team that can compete defensively against France’s extremely strong forward-line.
Not only did the visitors concede twice against an Ireland team who simply couldn’t handle the French a few weeks back, but they often came under pressure in that match and presented their opponents with enough chances to concede more than the two that they did. Such a performance does not bode well ahead of a match against Deschamps’ powerful attacking machine.
Against both Ireland and Italy, France went forward with purpose, created chances and scored goals. The confidence in the Les Bleus camp should be high, so it’s very easy to see them walking all over this relatively inexperienced USA team. With two promising performances behind them, Deschamps’ side is backed to go to Russia off the back of a big victory. Our prediction is a home win for France.
Real Zaragoza vs Numancia, Spanish Segunda Promotion Play-Off At La Romareda. Time: 17:00 GMT
Given that this is a two-legged tie, Zaragoza should be reasonably pleased with the first-leg result. At Nuevo Estadio Los Pajaritos, Natxo González’s men did what they needed to be keeping their opponents fairly quiet, while they dominated proceedings overall. Having been on top for large parts of that game, they ought to be confident of doing better on their own patch.
In drawing 1-1 against a team who’re very good on their own patch, Numancia will probably be a tad disappointed that they failed to walk away from the first leg tied at 1-1. Numantinos will know full well that La Romareda is a tough place to go, so gaining an advantage ahead of the trip east would’ve been ideal. They’re rather patchy away from will also be playing on the minds of the visitors ahead of this fixture.

On their own patch, Numancia would’ve surely fancied themselves to do the business, though as they failed to do so, the visitors may now be experiencing contrasting feelings. Not only are Zaragoza strong on their own patch, but the away form of Jagoba Arrasate’s men does not bode well. In fact, given that they won just three away matches during the regular season, it’s remarkable that Numancia even made the playoffs.
To say that they struggled to win games on the road is a bit of an understatement. Not only did the visitors take all three points on just three occasions, but they also struggled immensely when taking on the top teams away from the comforts of home. Numancia recorded just one win from five matches away against the other five teams who finished in the top six.
Offensively, by scoring six goals in those five matches, they didn’t do too badly, but they were very poor at the other end of the pitch, keeping zero clean sheets and conceding a total of 11 goals. When they visited La Romareda earlier in the season, Numancia lost by three goals to nil.
In contrast to the visitors’ rather poor away record against top teams, Zaragoza comes into this massive game with an immaculate home record against the other five teams who ended the campaign inside the top six. The hosts won each of their five matches against top-six opposition at La Romareda during the regular season, scoring an impressive 12 goals in doing so.
Having stayed in the game on the road, Natxo González’s men, who finished the regular season in the third position, are backed to finish the job and reach the final. Our prediction is a home win for Real Zaragoza.
